Journal / Gert Wingårdh featured in an exhibition at… More information
Is an architect an artist? Gert Wingårdh looks up the word on Swedish Wikipedia, and eight categories of artistic practice are listed. There is no mention of architects.
He looks further, and in English he find I.M. Pei, architect, in eighth place. In German, architect is sixth, and in French the word architecte is near the top of the list.
Eight Projects: From Liljevalchs to Nationalmuseum is one of this summer’s exhibitions at Strandverket Art Museum on the island of Marstrand. The show features eight projects that reflect what has been most important to Wingårdh lately. They span from a tower designed to lift seven thousand tons of water forty meters in the air to a screen roof made of stacked glued laminated beams (will it collapse like a house of cards?) to the renovation of Sweden’s largest museum of art and design.
A number of large new models explain the projects along with eight exhibit tables crowded with sketches, photos, and drawings. In connection with the exhibition, a book of the same title is being published. It alternates material from the exhibition with the architect’s personal writings about the process before, during, and after the design of the projects.
Eight Projects: From Liljevalchs to Nationalmuseum opens on Saturday, June 16 from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. Peter Apelgren will open the event with a talk at 1:00 PM. Next Pål Svensson, Strandverket’s Artistic Director, will present the museum’s exhibitions accompanied by Christina Ekstrand, Nicklas Randau, Jenny Carlsson, Julia Selin, Katrin Westman, and Gert Wingårdh. At 3:00 PM, Gert Wingårdh will give a guided tour of the show. Eight Projects: From Liljevalchs to Nationalmuseum will be on view until September 30.
About Strandverket Art Museum:
Strandverket Art Museum is located inside Södra Strandverket, an old stone fortification built in the mid-nineteenth century to defend the inhabitants of Marstrand Island from the Danes. The art museum opened in 2012 under the direction of Hasse Persson. In 2017, Pål Svensson took over as Artistic Director, and in February of that year the administration of the museum was absorbed by the municipality.
Strandverket has three exhibition periods each year: spring, summer/early fall, and winter. Information on current exhibitions can be found here.
