Journal / Wingårdhs opens a verdant street-level space in… More information
The building lies at Kungsgatan 10A in downtown Gothenburg, a stone’s throw from Fiskekyrkan and Järntorget. Wingårdhs has been headquartered here since the late 1980s. The office is now adding another floor, which we’re calling Street Level.
A retail space, a café, or a brand new office? Many have come in and inquired about the verdant new space in the heart of downtown Gothenburg. Here comes the answer: Street Level is one part of Wingårdhs’s ambition to open up, look out, and at the same time allow new eyes to look in.
“I’ve had my eye on the ground-floor space here for a long time,” says Gert Wingårdh, “and I’ve seen what potential it has both architecturally and socially. It is inspiring to finally get an opportunity to take over the old shop and gut the space and bring out original materials that date back to various eras. It's reuse in action!”
What was once a retail space with fiberglass wallcovering and tile floors is today a workplace with raw, exposed surfaces. Unpainted wallboard, leveling compound floors, green plants, and a layer of pink twinwall polycarbonate sheeting. Inside the restrooms, visitors are met by a different tone: here the space has been “dipped” in cornflower blue and the freestanding pedestal sink is hewn from a single block of stone.
Wingårdhs Street Level is a space of 240 square meters that holds the kitchen for the whole office as well as conference rooms and reception area and our communications department. The space is alive with vegetation that will transform it over time, and its appearance will evolve over the course of the day as well.
Street Level is also Wingårdhs’s first step toward becoming a more open, public organization. Here there will be opportunities to invite in guests for lectures, seminars, and networking events.
