The Cemetery Pavilion

Projects / The Cemetery Pavilion   More information

A wooden house clad in an emerald green raincoat, made out of glass. A sunny day the colours blend together with the surrounding chlorophyll. During other seasons the building turns and becomes a vivid memory of the summer and the greenery.

The Cemetery Administration of Sundbyberg needed more space to expand their work. The location in the park-like cemetery demanded a building that wouldn’t call too much attention to itself and would preserve the garden character of the site.

The answer was an understated building with a wooden structure that is as simple as it is precise. The frame is made of cross-laminated wood: large, thick sheets oriented in different directions are fused together to form bearing walls of solid wood. Inside, the ceilings are predominantly wood, as are most of the floors. Where the greatest wear is expected, we are met instead by the distinctive green marble of Kolmården. The wood must be protected from the ravages of time, so we’ve clad it glass, the material that is forever.

In addition to wood, marble, and glass, the interior is finished with pale leather, the exterior with steel and concrete. The flat roofs are planted with green sedum.

A reflexive house that mirrors the light, the shadows, the sun and the turn of the seasons.
