Science and visitors
Waren, Mecklenburg, Germany
Client: Landkreis Müritzeum
Müritz is the biggest lake in Germany. In the spring the cranes stops here. The medieval city of Waren lies as a springboard to a great natural preservation area. The “Müritzeum” is a science- and visitors centre, holding exhibitions, experiments and aquariums.
Two cones, slightly shifted in plan, shape the building.
The circular form opens up, by sharp cuts, with the entrance cutting as the most prominent. The load carrying inner layer is varnished yellow (as on a yacht) while the exterior cladding is charcoaled to a maintenance free black surface, (where the ribs of the wood grain are easily touched and read). The “floating” character of the building corresponds to the setting on the lake. The project was given the first prize in an invited competition. It is currently under construction.
