Wingårdhs wants to turn sleepy fish harbor into new city district

The future of Gothenburg's Fish Harbor is a destination, for the industry and visitors alike

At the quay in Gothenburg's Fiskhamn, the fishing boats have delivered their catch for over 100 years and the fish auction that takes place early every morning is a well-known spectacle in the city. Commissioned by Göteborgs Fiskhamn, we have developed a vision for the area, which today suffers from logistical and technical problems, where floods have been one of the consequences.

Our vision is inspired by the San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf and originates from the city's proud tradition of shipping, fishing and trade. Today, the harbor area has a yearly revenue of SEK 4.6 billion and houses 724 job opportunitites from 40 different countries. This large scale business demands reasonable premises for it to be able to operate.

We propose new optimized and modernized premises that provide the best conditions for the fishing industry to develop in the area. Gothenburg Fiskhamn's piers and quays will be restored, and a modern industrial building will replace the outdated existing premises. The new building enables space for growth, efficiency and innovation. The fish processing with its deliveries of goods is placed in the building's ground floor and a small-scale structure is built on top that houses restaurants as well as traders and other public actors.

We want to open up the area and create a thriving destination, both for the fishing industry, tourists and the people of Gothenburg alike. We visualize a social cluster where the industry shares premises with retailers, wholesalers, homes, cafes, restaurants. A new district can emerge.
