Saturn Bowl

Saturn Bowl

Saturn Bowl is a wooden bowl designed by Wingårdhs for Zanat's tenth-anniversary collection. Created within the framework of Zanat's hand-carving tradition, the object reduces its idea to two elementary forms: a bowl and a sphere. The wooden ball rests within the vessel, creating a composition defined by balance, movement and equilibrium. Both functional object and small sculpture, Saturn Bowl explores how a minimal gesture can generate a surprising spatial presence.

A bowl. And a ball. A game of equilibrium.

Saturn Bowl was designed by Wingårdhs for Zanat’s Ten Collection, created to mark the tenth anniversary of the Bosnian company and its internationally recognised woodcarving tradition. The brief invited a select group of designers to create small objects that reflected Zanat’s values of craftsmanship, sustainability and timeless design while exploring new expressions in carved wood.

The object reduces its idea to two elementary forms: a vessel and a sphere. A carved wooden bowl provides a stable base while a wooden ball introduces tension, movement and balance. Together they create a composition that appears both complete and unfinished, inviting interaction while retaining the presence of a small sculpture.

The project forms part of a long-standing collaboration between Wingårdhs and Zanat that began in 2014. Over the past decade, the partnership has expanded beyond furniture and objects to include bespoke architectural elements, hand-carved wall panels, bars and custom interiors developed for museums, workplaces and cultural institutions.

Throughout this collaboration, Zanat’s craftsmanship has been used not as decoration but as an integral part of the architectural experience.

Produced in sustainably sourced wood and shaped through hand-carving techniques recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, Saturn Bowl embodies the values shared by both companies: respect for material, attention to detail and the belief that longevity is created through quality rather than novelty. Variations in grain, colour and texture make each piece unique, revealing both the natural character of the wood and the hand of the maker.

Part functional object and part sculptural study, Saturn Bowl occupies the space between utility and contemplation. It can hold fruit, keys or everyday possessions, yet its primary purpose may simply be to demonstrate how a minimal gesture can generate richness, character and delight. In that sense, the object reflects the same ambition that underpins Wingårdhs’ architecture: creating lasting value through the careful orchestration of material, craft and form.

"We were interested in how little is actually needed to create a meaningful object. A bowl and a sphere are among the most elementary forms imaginable, yet together they create tension, balance and curiosity."
