The Multiarena

The Multiarena

The Multisport Arena is a new sports and education facility in Malmö's Stadion district, bringing together sport, learning and workplace functions within a single building. Developed as a new landmark for the area, the project combines a full-size indoor football pitch, spectator facilities, offices and educational spaces beneath a sweeping timber roof structure. The lower levels are clad in reused brick sourced from six demolished buildings across southern and central Sweden, creating a facade assembled from multiple histories, colours and material origins. Together, the reclaimed masonry and large-span timber structure establish the building as both a civic destination and a demonstration of circular construction.

Six houses make one arena

Lomma Town Hall (yellow, approx. 30%), Veddesta 2:73 (terracotta, approx. 33%), Språkskrapan (yellow, approx. 10%), Sloalyckan, Falkenberg (yellow, approx. 12%), GMM Lund (ochre, approx. 10%) and Älvsjö (yellow, approx. 5%).

Together, these reclaimed bricks form the base of Malmö’s new Multisport Arena.

Rising from this reused masonry plinth, a sweeping roofscape gathers three distinct volumes into a single

sculptural form at the edge of Malmö’s Stadion district.

Defined by white ceramic brick, concave corners and generous ground-floor arches, the building draws on the architectural heritage of the surrounding stadium area while establishing a new identity of its own.

The Multisport Arena brings together a full-size indoor football hall, basketball and parasport facilities, a national sports upper secondary school, offices and public services within a single structure. Located between Stadionområdet and Pildammsparken, it acts as a new urban link between sport, education and civic life, accommodating both everyday use and larger events with up to 5,000 visitors.

At the heart of the building is a sports hall of Olympic scale. Ten straight glulam beams spanning 79 metres carry the roof above a vast column-free space. While dimensions of this kind are more commonly associated with the world’s largest sporting events, the hall is built primarily for the next generation – young athletes and parasport students from across Sweden who come to Malmö to train, learn and compete.

Beyond the arena itself, the building brings together a national sports upper secondary school, basketball and parasport facilities, offices, public services and spaces for the organisations that support sport at every level.

Together, they create a new centre for sport, education and community life in Malmö.

Architectural form, circulation and programme have been developed as a single system. Clearly defined entrances and carefully separated flows allow students, athletes, spectators and staff to share the building without conflict, while maintaining distinct identities for each activity.

A hybrid timber structure spans the large sports halls above, while the robust material palette is designed for long-term adaptability and low maintenance. Together, reclaimed brick, timber construction and flexible planning create a civic building capable of supporting changing needs over time.

"Parts of the building come from elsewhere. Brick from six demolished buildings and seats from the old Malmö Stadion have been given a new life here. Together with the timber structure, they tell a story about continuity rather than replacement."
