Wingårdhs turns recycled fabric into a high-rising, interactive art installation at the Way Out West festival in Gothenburg

Almost every building we have designed has had its own theme song. Classic, acoustic and totally synthetic, we see the importance of diversity in all cultural expressions – everything can bloom! And that our butterfly wing can contribute to this in the middle of the cultural outpost of Way Out West, Gothenburg feels fantastic, says Gert Wingårdh.

During the three days of the festival, "Vingen" will rise four meters up in the air and spread its wings like a multi-colored butterfly. Its tens of thousands of recycled pieces of fabric will flutter in the wind and create a unique space in the middle of the festival crowd. Its shape and expression inspired by the festival's graphic form – a butterfly wing in extreme magnification.

During the day, the sunlight is filtered between the fabric strips and the grid in the ceiling of the installation. In the evening there is a shift in the experience, as the room bathes in LED lights and inspires dance and movement. When the wind catches the fabric strips, the installation can more than double in size.

Developed by Wingårdh's team especially for Way out West, this is the office's first real meeting and collaboration with the well-known festival in Gothenburg.

– Almost every building we have designed has had its own theme song. When we designed the Universeum in Gothenburg it was I Rock, Therefore I Am with Prince. Vingen at Way Out West was inspired by Rex Orange County and Blood Orange, both performers at the festival. Classic, acoustic and totally synthetic, we see the importance of diversity in all cultural expressions – everything can bloom! And that our butterfly wing can contribute to this in the middle of the cultural outpost of Way Out West, Gothenburg feels fantastic, says Gert Wingårdh.

"Vingen" is expected to be an ambulatory festival installation with a long life. The 60 kilometers of fabric strips are all recycled waste material from the textile industry and the frame is entirely in wood.

Wingårdh's installation on Way Out West has been made possible together with the textile company Almedahls, Södra Wood, JP Disco, Integra and Scancord.
