Wingårdhs wins — will design new local hospital in Gothenburg

The Gröna samband project has a strong sustainability focus and covers 26,000 square metres, including facilities for both primary and specialist care as well as a café, pharmacy and open pre-school.

Gröna samband is the name of the proposal that won the architecture competition for the new local hospital (närsjukhus) at Wieselgrensplatsen. The proposal was designed by Wingårdhs, through architect Jonas Edblad, together with Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter and Sydväst arkitektur och landskap.

"On January 14, 2030, we'll welcome the first patient to the new local hospital," says a delighted Gert Wingårdh.

The project has a strong sustainability focus, with our proposal delivering a future-proof building with a low climate footprint. In total, Gröna samband covers 26,000 square metres and includes facilities for both primary and specialist care as well as a café, pharmacy and open pre-school. The hope is that the building will become part of everyday life not only for patients, but for citizens more broadly.

"We want to create a living building by mixing functions, thereby establishing a point of contact with the hospital before someone even becomes a patient. That strengthens preventive care for better health and quality of life for local residents in the long term," says Jonas Edblad, architect at Wingårdhs.

The jury's citation states, among other things: "Gröna samband is a thorough and highly competent architectural proposal with the potential to become a beloved and recognisable landmark in the city."

The jury's citation continues: "The proposal demonstrates insight and understanding of both the patient's and the operation's needs and conditions. The architects have designed a beautiful and well-functioning building with fine spaces and a structure that allows the operations to evolve over time. The outdoor environment is rich in greenery, with ample space for everyday urban life. The proposal offers a 'house of health' to Wieselgrensplatsen and the surrounding area — a hospital that is welcoming both externally, with its beautiful rounded form in the cityscape, and in how its operations are arranged internally. The solutions, materials and themes are well considered and will withstand further development."
